Parents Evening

Our next parents evening will be on 13th July 2009. A letter will be sent for times to be requested to see teachers. We hope that you can attend.

In addition, we will be having a parents pampering session, and also behaviour management advice from our resident expert, Judith Malone.

Bingo Night

following the success of our last bingo night, we are repeating the event after the parents evening, on the 13th July 2009. We have various prizes, along with a £100 top prize. We had over 50 people from the local community coming to support us and hope that this is repeated, along with us raising over £200, a sum which helps with the extra curricular clubs and activities.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE WHO SUPPORTED US.

SCHOOL VISITS AND RESIDENTIALS

Pupils continue to benefit from the extensive programme of off-site learning experiences planned by staff in school. Our new mini bus has enabled us to take pupils on educational visits to museums, theatres, temples and churches, sports events in gymnastics, seated volleyball, football, cross country and multi games competitions with other schools. Mr Crawford and Ms Sherring have also given up weekend time to take pupils to Leicester Rugby Club to see matches.

We have a full programme of residentials and activities for the week beginning 6-10th July. The focus for these trips is on learning independence, life skills and getting along with others, as well as seeing new places. Pupils will be going on residentials to Skegness, Cromford Wharf, Peak Centre Edale, Edinburgh by plane (year 11), and the Lake District for camping and youth hostelling near Ambleside. Every pupil in school will take part in a subsidised residential or activity trip.

Edinburgh Leavers!

The year 11 pupils finish their time at St Martins with a trip to Edinburgh... by air!

The pupils flew from East Midlands airport to Scotland in June. They all had a great time, and for some it was the first time on a plane. They all managed to climb to the top for the Castle, except Miss Rodgers! A big thank you is due for the time and effort given by the staff.

We will all miss the Year 11's as they have had such a fantastic journey through school. This year, every pupil left St Martins with a qualification, another first for the school. The qualifications included entry level, level 1 and GCSE. We await the results, due on 20th of August 2009!

Enterprise

Our very own apprentices have been working very hard to make money over the past weeks.  They have organised sales of cakes, raffle tickets, sponsored silences, which kept the teachers very happy, a market stall and year 11 sold items on eBay for commission!

The winners are the ones with the most money!

E TWINNING – Pen pals

Using the internet to making friends with staff and pupils from other schools in the UK, Europe and around the world. We are working on setting up pen pal contacts with pupils in a city in Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland as well as our Derby twinning town of Osnabruck in Germany. We have set up a link with the Ann Frank Special School in Osnabruck and they are keen to host staff and pupils from St Martins. Mr Oxley and Mrs Hanson are working on this project.

St Martins Around The World

Mr. Lawrence has returned from an exciting trip to Japan where he has been working on setting up links with Japanese pupils and teachers.

Our African project-Connecting Classrooms. Adam Davies from year 10 is now preparing to plan what he is going to take out to children in Tanzania, Africa, when he goes there in September with Mr Dodds and other teachers and pupils from Bemrose School and Noel Baker.  Adam will be representing the school and Derby as an ambassador, so we know he will do a great job for us. he will do a talk for the pupils, staff and parents when he gets back.

We are also going to help an African village in Mali set up an internet link for several schools to use.  We have managed to acquire a laptop that will be donated to a project called Village Ventures, who work with local people in African villages to provide education, water, libraries and other needed facilities.
